Do we repent over the fact that we caused it to happen? Or do we feel guilty about it being the cause of our unhappiness, and worse still, jealousy?

there's quite a bit of repentance as far as am concerned. Though it alternates with bouts of anger at being denied a second chance, which sometimes is deserved, sometimes not.
